About the Company :
Grindwell Abrasives Limited was the first company to setup a manufacturing facility for abrasives in India in 1941. In the late 60s, the company came to be associated with Norton Company , USA through a technological and financial collaboration, after which they were renamed Grindwell Norton Limited . In 1990, Compagnie de Saint Gobain, a French multinational, acquired Norton Company, USA and in 1996 Grindwell Norton Ltd. became a majority owned subsidiary. In 1972, GNL backward integrated into the production of Silicon Carbide (SiC) one of the major raw materials for bonded and coated abrasives and refractories .
A second unit for the manufacture of SiC was setup in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh in the early 80s and the operations in Bangalore were discontinued. GNL has recently invested Rs. 124 million in a JV in Bhutan for manufacturing SiC crude. GNL has a 70% stake in the JV and its total investment in the same is expected to be Rs. 156 million.
